Staff need to reach systems from home, from a client site, from the road. The wrong way to deliver that is to forward a port straight to the internet; the right way is a controlled tunnel that terminates on the firewall.
Why open ports get found
The internet is scanned constantly. An exposed remote-desktop or management port is found within minutes and attacked within hours — it does not need to be advertised. Every open port is a permanent invitation.
“You do not have to be targeted to be breached. An open port is found by the scan, not by the attacker.”
Remote access done right
A firewall-terminated VPN gives the same reach without the exposure: the only thing listening is the VPN service, everything inside stays private, and access is authenticated and logged.
MFA is not optional
A password alone is one leak away from being someone else’s. Multi-factor authentication on the VPN means a stolen credential is not enough to get in.
Off-boarding is part of access
Access that is never revoked accumulates. Removing VPN accounts the day someone leaves — and reviewing them regularly — keeps the door list honest.
